Tuesday 1st May comments: Today we welcomed in the first day of May and at last (after what has seemed an age) we were open to the public. Although the wind continued to blow from the north-east(keeping things cool) it had calmed enough to allow visitor boats to sail, the first time in seven days. It was a welcome relief for the ranger team, as not only did we welcome visitors, we also stocked up on supplies, welcomed post and got vital water supplies delivered.
On the seabird front, Puffins have started cleaning out waterlogged burrows, the first Kittiwake and Black-headed Gull eggs were discovered today whilst good numbers of Terns were noted in the evening roost, including 12 Little Terns. Following yesterdays huge arrival of migrants, many had moved on although the long staying Wryneck was still present with other highlights including Green Sandpiper, a female Ring Ouzel, Collared Dove (a scarcity out here), Moorhen and Pied Flycatcher amongst others. The long-term weather forecast looks good, so fingers crossed for a settled period - we need it.
